![]() This is a story for relatively undemanding mystery fans. Readers may keep turning the pages to find out whodunit, but they won't really be caught up in the action. However, minimal character development and the somewhat contrived plot weaken the suspense. ![]() The book is billed as a page-turner, and in fact each chapter ends with a cliff-hanging paragraph. Finally it is revealed that old friends of the family who are visiting for the summer are attempting to defraud their insurance company by stealing from themselves. Then suspicion falls on Bonnie's grandmother, whom Kate decides is a kleptomaniac. Expensive china figurines are stolen, the hired help behaves oddly, and Bonnie's twin cousins look like the guilty parties. Pieces of jewelry belonging to Kate and other house guests disappear. Soon she is enmeshed in the mysterious goings-on of the household.
