When Beck Holiday lost her father in the North Tower on 9/11, she also lost her memories of him. Casler tells a humorous story about a sentry sitting down with his rifle in pieces when and an officer walks upon him and asked him what he was doing. As the war progressed and men and horseflesh were pushed to their limits, men began to sit during picket duty. At first, pickets were supposed to stand at their post. I like the story about how protocol became a little lax by the wars end. There are some funny anecdotes in this book. That is an interesting comment from a member of Stonewall’s vaunted foot cavalry. Casler said that men from the part of Virginia where he lived weren’t used to so much walking. Others did so to visit home which was often in areas occupied by Union troops. In fact, many who deserted did so just to join the cavalry or one of the many partisan bands that harassed the Union rear at all times. Insights gleaned from reading this book was that the infantry was a hellaciously difficult life falling asleep on picket duty was a death sentence and everyone longed to be in the cavalry. His time in the Stonewall brigade was pretty miserable. I've heard it said that "Nostalgia is a dirty liar that insists things were better than they seemed." If that is true, Casler doesn't seem overly nostalgic. He finally got his wish to join the cavalry and was soon captured and ended the Civil War in a POW camp. He was a foot soldier, a pioneer (engineer), a part time deserter and he longed to be in the cavalry. This is a very readable memoir of John Casler. At the same time, Singer insists on seeing through to the end a melodramatic narrative line for each character. Thus, the texture of The Estate is flattened by the continuance of once brilliantly rendered characters, now predictable dramatic pawns to a chronicle of enlightenment ideas, upheaval and dispersal. ,” but because he has apparently decided to rush in on that intention. That occurs not because, as one might guess, Singer has explicitly undertaken to render an epoch in which, as he says in the Preface, “all the spiritual and intellectual ideas that triumphed in the modern era had their’ roots. Characters once distinctive are blurred and barely distinguishable from one another in the waters of social drama which overwhelm them. The Estate, however, not only fails to tell very much more, but succeeds in reducing the finely-wrought lives established in its masterful forerunner, The Manor. Later, John was sure they’d recount it as being of tidal proportions, hyperbolic as they always were when it came to surfing expeditions. The wave was perhaps the greatest in height they’d ever seen.
